Loved the analysis. Having just re-watched season 5, I'm struck again by the similarity in Sam and Dean's "good son" argument in this episode and Michael and Lucifer's in Swan Song.
For me, the scene that made this episode one of my favourites was the phone conversation where Dean told Sam he was proud of him, and Sam realized that Dean was saying goodbye before he hightails it back to his brother.
